During my last internship, i and a few other of my friends have been send to Pamol, Sabah under the IOI Corporation to do some sampling of biodiversity in that area. Our task was simple, to gather all information regarding biological diversity in the specified area which include flora and fauna.
Frankly, at the first time, i wasn’t really hype about all “internship” thing but i try to get along with it. We departures at LCCT Terminal via Air Asia – the cheapest ride in town. After registering a few thing, we all take off. Woop-pii. About 2 hours 35 minutes we arrive at Sandakan Airport and being pick up by Mr. Mok and a few others, who is the official from IOI Corporation in Pamol Estates. After being brief and a little introduction chatting, we were taken to Giant Hypermarket near by to buy some stuff and food storage for about a month! Yeah, a month!! Mr. Mok tell us that the pamol area to the city take nearly 3 hours journey. So we will not having our outing, or go to do some shopping at the weekend unless at the end of the month where we will follow their staff to post a letter or package at the post office. WTF..
At the first week there, we were introduce to our field of sampling. There are 2 place that we need to do the sampling and identification; first in the palm oil plantation and the other is near the swampy area located at the edge of the estate. Haha well, this is where the fun begin actually. We were told to do “scientific” sampling and identification, but honestly – no internet connection, lack of resources, we only brought several book that are usefull in identification but that only for classification of insect, bird and mammals. Not including the reptiles, fish and the amphibians. Lack of several scientific tools and much more.. Again WTF…
But we try as best as we can get. After three weeks of sampling we got about 52 species of birds, 15 species of mammals, 325 species of insect, 45 species of fish, and a few of the amphibians and other which i forgot. We end the sampling week and begin the crucial time of all, the identification of the species. we need to classiffy it according to IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), Taxonomy identification and much more.But during this three week that i have so much fun. Staying at night to do night trap at the swampy area where the probability of the crocodile there is high, fishing in the river just to get the fish which in scientific methods did not approve at all hahaha who cares!!! and much more!

Ohh yeah, almost forgot to tell also, we all do only the fauna part. The flora part was done from other 3 student from UMS (Universiti Malaysia Sabah). Its nice to know them all, the sporting guy Frankie, the joyfull Jac and the sweet and lovely Mars. Hahaha.. (Hope to see you all soon!.). They collaborated with us to do the complete sampling and identification report of the biodiversity in that area.
That is the brief looking of my internship time. I have so much that i want to write about it here but i think this is enough for now. So to all my friend that are currently or will doing the intership later. Just enjoy it, have fun, and embrace it. Trust me!! It worth of your time.

i’m not a member of IUCN. Part of this report will be complied with the other research done by the IOI people.
They said this research was did to counter the propaganda who’s claim by building more palm oil plantation will eventually destroy more biological diversity. So they did this survey to proof them wrong.
